We just received a great question from a friend.  He asked a question a lot of folks are probably thinking to themselves – why?  Why, if I’m happy with my current genealogy software, would I go through the pain of switching to another application?

The answer really comes in three parts:

  1. If you’re truly happy with your current software, that’s great.  Really, we’re happy for you.  At least initially, we’re not going to try to convert you to Origins.  Maybe down the road, but not right away.  If your current software does everything you want, nothing you don’t, and works just the way you want it to, then that’s great.  You should stick with it.  For now.  Eventually, we hope that Origins will be compelling enough for you to take a look at, and we’re working hard to get to that point sooner rather than later.  Before long, we will have so many features and capabilities that our competition can’t come close to that you’ll be asking yourself why you waited to switch.
  2. One of our primary focus areas is to make the “pain” of switching as minimal as possible.  We’re building importers to be able to bring everything – tree data, media files, sources, citations, all of it – from the current crop of software into Origins with minimal hassle.  From there, the only thing you’ll need to do is get comfortable with Origins, but again, a prime focus area for us is ease of use, so we don’t think that will be a problem either.
  3. Our target audience is people new to genealogy, people who aren’t yet heavily invested in an existing software program, or people who are so fed up with the current crop of software that they look at Origins and say “why would I even consider anything else?”

So there it is.  Those are our reasons why Origins will offer a compelling argument for a lot of people.

Words Are Cheap

Yep.  They are.  It’s easy to lay all of that out there when we have nothing to show for it.  Yet.  The short answer is that we’re further along than we’re letting on publicly, and things are looking awesome, so we’re comfortable throwing down the gauntlet.  The proof, as they say, is in the pudding, and we’ll have lots to show over the next month or two.

Stay tuned…
